British sustainable packaging company Frugalpac has launched its Frugal Bottle – the world’s first and only commercially available paper wine bottle – in the US with four new wines from American producer Signal 7.
Signal 7 has become the first wine producer in the world to release 100% of its wine in paper bottles.
50% of the carbon footprint of wine bottles is down to its packaging – glass bottles, which use a lot of energy to create, transport and dispose of.
But the Frugal Bottle, made from 94% recycled paperboard with a food grade pouch – cuts the carbon footprint of wine and spirits bottles by 84%.
Signal 7’s founder Rob Van Renterghem decided to use the Frugal Bottles for their wines as he’s convinced ‘it’s the right thing to do.’
The new wines Signal 7 wines in the Frugal Bottle are:
- Social Red, a 2020 Argentinian red wine from Mendoza
- 2020 Chilean Sauvignon Blanc
- 2020 French Rosé
- Stash – a 2019 Syrah-based Chilean blend, crafted by Wine Enthusiast’s 2020 New World Winery of the Year nominee, Pilar Miranda.
All the wines are made with organic grapes, have no added sugar, are low in carbs and are vegan friendly.
Signal 7’s Rob Van Renterghem said:
“We just wanted to do the right thing.
“Whilst glass bottles have traditionally been used for wine, they use so much energy to produce and if we’re going to save the planet from climate change, we all need to do our bit. Half the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine is the bottle itself.
“So after much research and debate, we chose the breakthrough Frugal Bottle for our wine because of its radically reduced carbon and water footprint over glass or aluminium. It’s also five times lighter than glass, uses recycle paperboard and is easy to recycle again.
“I was thrilled when I saw the Frugal Bottle as it literally serves as a blank canvas for artists to share their talents with others and bring a new level of beauty to the bottle and table. We’re really proud to not only bring the Frugal Bottle to the US but also become the first wine brand to release all its wine in a paper bottle
Frugalpac’s CEO Malcolm Waugh added:
“We’re delighted that after having successful launches and sales across Europe, the Frugal Bottle is now available in the US. We believe there is a huge market for wines and spirits in sustainable packaging in the States and we’re so pleased Signal 7 has chosen to lead the paper bottle revolution in the US.”
