FRUGALPAC UNVEILS FUTURE OF WINE RETAILING WITH INTERACTIVE SUPERMARKET DISPLAY OF FRUGAL BOTTLES AT PROWEIN

British sustainable packaging company Frugalpac unveils the future of wine retailing at ProWein with an interactive supermarket shelf display of its Frugal Bottles with wine and spirits brands from around the world.

Their stand in Hall 9 Stand B71 at ProWein 2024 at Messe Dusseldorf between March 10 and 12, is displaying some of the 130 different Frugal Bottles already available.

The Frugal Bottle is made from 94% recycled paperboard and has a carbon footprint up to six times lower than a standard glass bottle.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to scan the QR codes of the shelf markers for each wine and spirit to find out more about the brand and book slots to speak with Frugalpac staff and some of the brands already successfully using the Frugal Bottle.

Frugalpac’s stand also highlights a range of new customers and brands, including its new Frugal Bottle for Aldi UK – the UK’s first supermarket own-brand to use the Frugal Bottle for Wine..

Aldi’s new Cambalala South African Shiraz and Cambalala South African Sauvignon Blanc will be available in stores from 18th March, which is also Global Recycling Day.

A 2023 Institute of Grocery Distribution report found that 33% of all supermarket packaging environmental impacts are from the beer, wine, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks category. To meet the industry’s commitment to halve the environmental impacts of their packaging systems by 2030, will require major changes.

The IGD report said to meet this goal, supermarkets need to increase recycled content, maximise recyclability and decarbonise supply chains.

More than 35 different drinks producers from around the world have launched wines, and spirits in the Frugal Bottle, which is available in 25 countries including Australia, New Zealand Japan, North America, Canada, the UK, across Europe and South Africa.

Frugalpac will also be promoting its Frugal Bottle Assembly Machines, which allow drinks brands, contract fillers and packaging companies to produce their own Frugal Bottles locally.

Each machine can produce 2.5m Frugal Bottles a year and offers a great opportunity to contract fillers and packaging companies to increase the value of their products and services.

Frugalpac has already sold or agreed to sell three Frugal Bottle Assembly Machines to Canada, the US and Australia.

KinsBrae Packaging in Canada bought the first machine to serve the Canadian and North American drinks markets and became operational in January 2024.

And in the US, a second Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine has been sold to Monterey Wine from California who will be the first contract packer in the world to offer both Frugal Bottle manufacture and filling of wines and spirits in Frugal Bottle in Q2 2024 and Frugalpac have just received a letter of intent to sell a machine to Australia for Mother of Pearl Vodka

Visitors to the Frugalpac stand will also be able to discuss filling opportunities with Broadland Drinks, who are the UK’s largest filler of the Frugal Bottle.

About the Frugal Bottle

  • It’s lighter. The Frugal Bottle weighs just 83g so it is up to five times lighter than a normal glass bottle, making it easier to carry and lighter to transport.
  • It’s better for the environment. An independent Life Cycle Analysis by Intertek found the Frugal Bottle, which is made from recycled paperboardwith no chemicals, has a carbon footprint up to six times (84%) lower than a glass bottle and more than a third less than a bottle made from 100% recycled plastic. The Frugal Bottle’s water footprint is also at least four times lower than glass.
  • It’s easy to recycle again. Simply separate the plastic food-grade pouch from the paper bottle and put them in your respective recycling bins. The food grade pouch is certified recyclable and is a polyethylene metallised polyester laminate, the same material used in bag in box wines.
  • It uses less plastic than a plastic bottle. The Frugal Bottle uses up to 77% less plastic. Only 15g compared to a 64g bottle made from 100% recycled plastic. The food grade pouch is a polyethylene metallised polyester laminate, the same material used in bag in box wines. It is recyclable.
  • It stands out. As the Frugal Bottle is made from recycled paperboard, it allows for 360-degree branding across the bottle. No other wine or spirits bottle looks or feels like it, so it stands out on shelf and table.
  • It’s better for drinks producers. The Frugal Bottle can be produced in the heart of their bottling facility, offers complete freedom on design and print, is more cost effective to transport than glass bottles while reducing their carbon footprint further.
